Home runs aplenty for ‘09 Yanks

The 2009 Yankees have hit a lot of home runs. In fact, they are second in the majors — only behind Texas — in homers and rank first in slugging percentage (.473).

Ninety-one of their 159 homers (57.2 percent) have been hit at home. They totaled 180 last season, good for fourth in the American League. Is Mark Teixeira accounting for all the difference?

Here are the top 10 homer-happy Yanks of 2009:

Player HR
Mark Teixeira 27
Johnny Damon 19
Alex Rodriguez 19
Nick Swisher 18
Robinson Cano 16
Hideki Matsui 16
Jorge Posada 13
Derek Jeter 11
Melky Cabrera 10
Eric Hinske 5
Barring an injury, it looks like the Yankees will have six players with over 20 homers by season’s end. That hasn’t happened since 2004 when they totaled 242 dingers.
