Speculation: Jack Cust next Yankees’ DH?

The Athletics are non-tendering RF/DH Jack Cust. Why should you care? Because this guy has serious power and I think he could be a good fit for the Yankees as a DH or bench player (to replace Eric Hinske).

He’s been fairly consistent over his last three years batting in the middle of the Athletics’ lineup. Here are his averages:

G AB 2B HR RBI BB SO AVG OBP SLG
140 572 18 28 83 103 182! .241 .378 .462
Please, notice the exclamation mark after his strikeout average. He’s led the American League in strikeouts in each of the last three years. But, along with all of those strikeouts comes a lot of walks. He led the league in 2008 with 111 free passes.

He reminds me a little of Nick Swisher, but with more strikeouts and more home runs. Thoughts?
