A-Rod provides clutch hit to secure 3-1 win for Pettitte

Those who stayed awake for last night's late game (myself included) saw a dandy. It was a pitchers' duel at Safeco Field between Andy Pettitte and Jason Vargas. Pettitte pitched with no run support through seven innings until Alex Rodriguez scored the tying run in the eighth and drove in the two winning runs in the ninth for a 3-1 win.

Best of All: This was one of Pettitte's best starts of the year. He struck out nine, walked four and allowed five hits and a run. The run was earned, but came on a throwing error by Pettitte.

A-Rod is hitting .272 on the year, but I think everyone has noticed that he has really made his hits count this year. Plus, a nice base running play in the eighth last night and a great defensive play the night before. He's doing it all this year.

Nick Swisher stayed hot with Robinson Cano's bat suggestion. The first-time All-Star went 4-for-4 with a walk!

Worst of All: Brett Gardner has cooled off a bit from his scorching June. He has two hits in his last 15 at-bats.

Coming Up: Tonight should be an even better pitching matchup with Phil Hughes and Cliff Lee slated to start. Find out what Hughes could accomplish in the start in a post later today.
