Nate’s Takes: CC Sabathia, Robinson Cano, Alex Rodriguez, Russell Martin, trades

Hey Yankees fans, I have returned from my trip to Europe just in time to watch Derek Jeter make history. Only Derek Jeter could reach a milestone in the fashion and even the most optimistic Yankee fan couldn’t see that coming. Hopefully Jeter can start hitting right away, but in my opinion he should be moved down in the order as soon as possible.

While I was in Europe the Yankees were cruising and it seemed as though they were going to put some distance between them and the Red Sox. Unfortunately, after Mariano Rivera blew the save against the Mets, the Yankees proceeded to lose ground and now find themselves one game behind their rivals going into the break. With a lot of Yankees banged up, this break could not have come at a better time. Here are my takes:

The Yankees need to give CC Sabathia whatever he wants to stay at the end of the year. Not only has Brian Cashman never signed a
pitcher that has performed this well, but the Yankees rotation without the big guy would be a mess. Jeter should make an appearance the All-Star game. In the year where he becomes the first Yankee to 3,000 hits he should at least show up in a suit and tie.

Not a big fan of Robinson Cano participating in the Home Run Derby. The Home Run Derby seems to mess up the swings of players who are not typical homerun hitters. Although Cano is known for killing the all in batting practice so watch out, David Ortiz.

Alex Rodriguez having surgery was the right decision. Hopefully he comes back strong for a playoff push.

Russell Martin and Larry Rothschild deserve a lot of credit in the
first half. I know Martin has a low batting average, but he has
handled the pitching staff better than anyone could imagine.  Another good signing by Brian Cashman.

I have been looking at the rosters of teams that could be sellers at the deadline. I found it hard to come up with a name that fits the Yankees needs. I think they Yankees may add a bench player or two, but besides that they need to just hope everyone gets healthy.

The Yankees have the All Star break followed by a road trip to see the Blue Jays and the Rays. They eventually play the Red Sox in early August and the schedule starts to bunch up as they have very few off days. Hopefully the Yankees start getting players back little by little and can finally win a series against the Red Sox. MY prediction is that the Yankees come back from the break healthy and red hot. Go AL All-Stars, home field advantage in the World Series would be nice.
