Halladay one-hits Yanks

Roy Halladay was absolutely dominant from the first pitch, throwing a one-hitter in a 6-0 shutout of the Yankees (86-49). The Blue Jays’ (60-74) ace only faced 31 batters in the gem.

Quick ‘Cap:
Halladay was working on a perfect game with two out in the fifth inning, but Jorge Posada worked a walk on a full count. The no-hitter disappeared with one out in the sixth when Ramiro Pena lined a double down the right field line. Two walks later, Alex Rodriguez had a chance to tie the game with a grand slam, but instead he was caught looking to end the inning.

The Blue Jays touched up Joba Chamberlain for two runs in the first and one more in the third. They made him work up to 59 pitches in just three innings, and his night was quickly over. All four September call-ups pitched in the game, but none of them had any great outings. Full box score here.

Thoughts:
The only way to do anything against a guy like Halladay is to beat him early. Once he gets into a groove, nobody on the planet can touch him (except for Pena, of course).

The loss ends the seven-game winning streak, but the series is still up for grabs.

The only defense I have for the Yanks is Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher did not play. But it wouldn’t have mattered the way Halladay was pitching.

Line of the Night:
Halladay: 9 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K. Who else? What a stud.

Up Next:
Two weekend matinee games coming up. Andy Pettitte (12-6, 4.03) will take on Brett Cecil (6-3, 5.42) on Saturday.
