Yankees sign 16 of top 17 draft picks

Last night was the deadline for signing players out of the 2010 draft. Heading into deadline day, the only pick unsigned by the Yankees in their top 10 rounds was their fourth-rounder Mason Williams, but the Yankees signed him before the deadline last night. They signed 16 of their top 17 picks and 29 of their 50 overall.

For scouting reports on Cito Culver (1st round), Angelo Gumbs (2nd) and Robert Segedin (3rd), check out my posts from draft night.

Yankees sign first round pick Cito Culver

The Yankees have signed this year’s first round pick Cito Culver for slot money, approximately $940,000, according to Buster Olney.

This was an important signing since he was a high school kid and had an offer from University of Maryland to play baseball there. Clearly, he liked the Yankees so much and wanted to get paid a few years in advance!

Interestingly enough, the Yankees drafted another shortstop out of high school who loved the Yankees recently. That man would be Derek Jeter.

The Yankees drafted another 17-year old with their second pick, Angelo Gumbs, a shortstop/outfielder out of Torrance (California) High School and went with Tulane junior third baseman Robert Segedin with their third pick.

Yankees draft SS Cito Culver in 1st round

The Yankees drafted SS Cito Culver with the last pick in the 2010 MLB draft, a 6-foot, switch-hitter out of Irondequoit High School in Rochester, NY.

Author of Pending Pinstripes Greg Fertel tweeted Culver does not appear on Keith Law’s Top 100 list for the draft. Here’s MLB.com’s profile of Culver (my emphasis provided in bold):

Culver is a switch-hitter who’s better from the left side of the plate, showing more bat speed from that side. He has some gap-to-gap power right now. He looks like he should have above-average speed, but his run times haven’t been great and he’s better underway. At times, scouts have questioned his effort left on the field, though they don’t question his natural gifts. He has the tools, especially his arm strength, to perhaps stay at shortstop, though a move to center field could make some sense. He has a Maryland commitment, but there was some buzz that he’d be willing to forego that for the right price.

The Yankees don’t have a pick in Compensation Round A, so that’s it for Yankees draft picks tonight.
