Francisco Cervelli’s foot injury could open the door for Jesus Montero

Spring training position battles are never fun when one player is forced to concede due to an injury, but such a scenario might be the case with the Yankees backup catcher role. Francisco Cervelli fouled a ball off his foot Wednesday, and after a couple of tests the Yankees don’t know exactly how bad it is. It could be a bruise, but it also could be a hairline fracture.

If it’s the latter, it’s good news for Jesus Montero.

UPDATE: It was the latter. Cervelli is out four to eight weeks.

Billy Martin and 1977 Yankees team Featured Card of the Week

Reggie Jackson, Thurman Munson, Ron Guidry, Chris Chambliss, Willie Randolph, Roy White, Sparky Lyle, and Billy Martin. The 1977 Yankees: World Series champs.

The only guy missing from this picture is George Steinbrenner, unless he is that man wearing black standing in the upper-right part of the card.

Note: It’s too bad the card companies don’t put a lot of value into printing team cards any more. They’re pretty cool, I think.

Jorge Posada is a little confused right now, and he should be

Via The New York Times:

“I’m going to keep thinking as a DH, keep working as a DH,” Jorge Posada said. “If I start catching in games, it’s not going to help me. I need to concentrate on being a DH, because if I start catching then I won’t be able to put it away. I know I can still catch. But I’m not thinking as a catcher anymore.”

According to the article, Posada still travels with his catching equipment bag too.

Here’s what I should have named this blog

My real name is Leonard, but everyone calls me Lenny. I’ve always liked how New York’s “NY” are also the last two letters of my nickname. But wouldn’t it be cool if I could have used something closer to my real name, but still have the “NY” in it?

Now it’s possible. A Cuban prospect likely to declare free agency this week has this brilliant name: Leon’ys Martin.

If anyone can find a pronunciation guide for “Leon’ys,” please drop me a line in the comments.

So what do you think, time to make a change?
